This spy movie is a master class in both acting and superb British film making. Please note members of the coalition, I said British, which once was best! And can be again - so wake up government! Back the British film industry up! Sorry Folks, I just have to say what I think!
TTSS is one to keep you on your toes - miss a scene and you’ll be in the dark. I loved the way that everyone was watching everyone else, including us as an audience. For lovers of old television series, also adapted from John Le Carre’s novel, you will not be disappointed with this new cinematic version.
The plot of course is very complicated, as George Smiley is called back from retirement to uncover the mole (spy in English) within the ranks of MI5, or is it 6? No Matter. There is a certain group which includes Colin Firth, Ciaran Hinds, Mark Strong, Benedict Cumberbatch, Toby Jones - any of whom could be the … mole. I picked the wrong guy, but hey it was fun guessing. With the clever use of flash backs and skilful camera work, we go into each character’s worlds both past and present, which leads you to an unexpected ending. It’s not easy to explain the plot - best that you see it and watch it unravel for yourself.
What I will say is that Gary Oldman, as Smiley, is totally riveting, and he must be Oscar bound and certainly BAFTA. His camera acting skills are a joy to watch, and it is worth the price of a ticket just to see him. The 1970’s era is caught perfectly, and the colour exact. Excellent.
