A bright young Char-Walla-Jamal (Dev Patel) is hauled off to the police station. Why you may ask? Because one dodgy TV host tells the cops that he’s cheating at India’s version of “ Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” as he’s one away from winning 20 million rupees (Don’t get any idea’s Mr. Tarrant) he’s not, and so during awful beatings & frankly vile torture, he tells his story which is to say the least incredible.
Two brothers emerge from some of the worst slums that I’ve ever seen & we travel with them via very talented Asian youngsters on their journey to young adulthood. They have adventures galore & one becomes a gun toting hood & the other –our-hero-is the “goodie” who dreams of getting his childhood sweetheart back whose fallen into underworld hands. He does the show because he thinks she’ll be watching “she my destiny” In many ways it’s like an old fashioned gangster film. Except its Mumbai & not L.A with its very different backdrop of slums to riches and the superb direction of Danny Boyle it’s wonderful. Does he win the girl & the money? Well, what do you think? 4 stars |
