Once in a while you come across a movie that’s so moving and one that makes you think so deeply. It’s hard to describe in mere words. “The Reader” directed by Stephen Daldry with a screen play by David Hare is such a film.
Telling the story of Hanna Schmitz (Kate Winslet) who at first glance is a tram conductress on 1958 West Germany. Simple enough… Well no not really. She has a very mysterious persona which is high lighted when she helps a 15 year old lad (David Kross) whose sick one day. She assists him and he returns to her flat to thank her & they begin a destructive affair which is highly sexual, & yet a little remote on her part. Suddenly she vanishes and our action moves forward to the 1960’s with the lad now a law student, witnessing a war crimes trail. One of the accused is Hannah who has been hiding great secrets. The unraveling of which shocks her former lover, who would read to her before they made love. Ralph Fiennes plays the lad as an adult, who tells the story and to tell you more would spoil your experience. Do see it. Winslet has never been better, & I hope will receive the Oscar as best actress. 4 stars |
