I have to say in all honesty. I absolutely loved this. I wasn’t sure if I was going to, mainly because the trailers left me feeling that it might be just a blown up O.K…ish television piece on a large screen. I could not have been more wrong. Emily Blunt (Victoria) and Rupert Friend (Albert) are totally believable as the royal lover’s who became man & wife. You can actually see the love light shining in their eyes. They are excellent. Story wise , it is England 1837, and a young Victoria is the political pawn that is being used.
Her Mothers lover and sneaky advisor Sir John Conroy (Mark Strong) is bent on getting the young lady to sign over her right of succession to the power of a Regent. Which would enable Conroy to pull strings, Victoria refuses & becomes Queen at the age of 18, she takes her advice from the liberal Prime Minister Lord Melbourne (Paul Bettany), meanwhile Price Albert is being pressured to seek her hand in marriage. His Father King Leopold of Belgium thinks it’s a good match and actually he was right. Victoria & Albert share a common bond in caring about the nation and its welfare plus the arts and each other. This film is superb, its all there the wheeling’s & dealings the intrigue and the political undercurrent. Performance wise Bettany is top of the class. Mark Strong is a wonderful villain. Everyone does a good job well done Sarah Ferguson in producing it and Julian Fellow’s for the script. |
