Primal Scream:

Image20 Years old this year. OMG!!!!!!!!! I hear you say.  This when it came was a great cross over album Mixing Indie with Acid House.  The album kicked off with “Move on Up”.  “Slip inside This House “, “Don’t Fight It, Feel, It” and “Higher Than the Sun” gave that dance feel mixed with rock. “Come Together” and “Loaded” are always on my compilation CD.  “Damaged” and I’m Comin Down,” pointed you in the direction of the next step for the band. Meaning the American, Blues-Rock sound. “Shine like Stars” ends the album. If this is an album you’ve never heard you really should give it a go.  This was also the first album to win The Mercury Music Prize.  With this album they cemented themselves in the history of music.

Nobody’s Daughter

Hole:

ImageFive years in the making but it seems to be worth the wait. (Well for me). See I know how a lot of people don’t really get her. But for me she’s one of the most under rated songwriters.  I know Linda Perry helps on most of the tracks but on songs like “Nobody’s Daughter” and “Pacific Coast Highway” you would have has to have lived it to write about it. “Letter to God” which is written by Linda Perry is so moving. I’m sure this was written for Courtney Love. Yes there are songs on here about Kurt; yes there are songs about pain, drugs, etc. But somewhere in the middle of that you have someone that bears their soul like no other. You wouldn’t see that on the X Factor. Go out and buy this. It’s worth it just for “How Dirty Girls Get Clean”.

Avi Buffalo:

ImageThis is really what MGMT’s new album should have been like. Fresh, Summery, Glowing, Pop Tunes, with a hand full of psychedelic stars chucked in for good measure. I really think this band could come out of nowhere and become very big indeed. Perfect summer song.

XXX

ImageI thought this would be worth a mention. It’s not going to be released on CD but you can find it all over the Internet.  DJ Wait What has put together a new band called The XX and The Notorious B.I.G. It works really well the way he has put this together. Like a few years ago when DJ Danger Mouse put together The Beatles’ White album with Jay Z’s Black Album.  Even though these guys have used someone else’s music there is still an art to it. Anyone that’s not heard of The XX should really check them out because they really do stand out. And of course when you listen to B.I.G it makes you imagine where it could have all gone. Anyway like I said I thought it would be worth a mention.

Slash:

ImageNow I was thinking this would be an over indulgent affair but I’m pleased to say I was wrong. The first track “Ghost” has a Guns n’ Roses feel to it. Except you have the brilliant Ian Astbury singing it. Good start. Next up is “Beautiful Dangerous” feat “Fergie”. You can’t go wrong with her vocal really. She sort of changes it to a Joan Jett vibe but still sounds great. He really has pulled out the big guns here. Tracks featuring Ozzy, Cypress Hill, Dave Grohl and Ian Astbury really do stand out. My two stand out tracks here are A remake of “Paradise City “ (feat Fergie & Cypress Hill) and “by The Sword” feat Andrew Stockdale of Wolfmother. Really good to hear Slash playing the guitar again.

Die by the Drop

ImageIntroducing the new offering from Dead Weather, how can you go wrong with Jack White at the helm? Just as they left us last time, they start with a new darker touch. It kicks off with a lovely haunting piano sound backed by a very dirty sounding guitar. Then onto Allison’s brilliant vocal. Jack White then adds his vocal over the top of hers making it sound like an echo. Then onto the big Dead Weather sound we all know and love. I’m sure people will put this down but for me it’s great. I hope Jack White never gives up making music.

Flash Delirium

ImageFirst offering from the new CD “Congratulation” It starts with a very OMD sounding synthesizer. Then moves on to a very psychedelic sounding pop song. It’s so catchy… It sounds like three songs in one. ut they do that so well. Really looking forward to the album. Here comes the summer.

Some Friendly

ImageOkay all get your baggy flairs out… Ten years ago this album flew out of Our Price (Does anyone remember that record shop). It’s not their best album but still it’s their first so worth having a look at. Some of the tracks were fillers by all accounts. Only being together for a year I think strong songs were low on the ground. Saying that, there really are some strong songs on here too. “You’re Not very well”, “Then”, “Opportunity”, “Polar Bear”,” Believe You Me” and the brilliant Sproston Green”. The remastered album that is being released will also have Peel sessions, remixes, Instrumentals. Also something to take note of on CD2 they have a B side called “Happen to Die” which is a stand out track for me. If you’ve not heard this before it’s worth a buy.

Life on Earth

ImageAndy Croft (Paul Weller’s keyboard player) and Chris Ketley (The Rakes) have put together 12 very soulful classic English sounding pop songs. Very 60’s sounding “Don’t go Changin” starts the album in a style that stays throughout. All of the great influences are here, The Beatles, The Who, Weller, etc. This is what the Kaiser Chiefs have been dying to sound like from the very beginning but just never got it right. From the first note on the CD I knew that it would be a joyful ride and I’m pleased to tell you I was right. It really is worth a listen. Stand out track for me is The Doors sounding “Torn Between Two” pure class.

The Defamation of Strickland Banks

ImageWhat ever this guy touches it turns to gold, whether it be acting alongside Michael Caine, rapping or singing his soul out. Which is pretty much what his doing on the new CD. It’s got to be one of the most exciting albums I’ve heard in a while. Each song is pure class. Coming from a guy who only four years ago gave us an album that once you had listened to it, you might have been scared to walk the streets, now gives us an album that would pull on your heart strings…

The style of his song writing is brilliant. From the opener “Love Goes Down” to the last track “What You Gonna do” he doesn’t put a foot wrong. If this is not a massive summer album I will eat my hat. Stand out tracks for me. “Writing’s on the Wall”, “Welcome to Hell” and “Hard Times”.
