  Beat The Devil’s Tattoo
I really feel that BRMC have lost their way. The first album was outstanding as was the second one but then it started to go wrong. In band fighting etc. It’s a shame because there was a time I thought they really were going to be the next big thing. Then Kasabian and now Detroit social Club have come along and stolen their thunder. I’m not saying this is a bad album just that it’s okay. It has not really moved along at all. The same dark Rock n Roll feel to it, but others do it better. “Beat The Devil’s Tattoo” really does move but just not enough. I’m really gutted not to be able to give a better review really. If you like BRMC then buy it, if it’s the first time head for the first album. (“Sweet Feeling” is worth a listen) |

The Maccabees, Bombay Bicycle Club, The Big Pink and The Drums: Cambridge Corn Exchange 19th Feb 2010 Unfortunately I missed The Drums I heard them as I was trying to get in but hey these things happen. I’m sure I will catch them again. It’s a shame I can’t tell you I missed The Big Pink… I was really looking forward to seeing them, but found myself very bored after about ten minutes. Next up was Bombay Bicycle Club, opening song “Emergency Contraception Blues” started the set off very well, followed by the crowd pleaser “Magnet” the very catchy “Open House” was next the biggest cheer of the night so far came with the opening note of “ Always Like This” this was a really strong set. Next up where The Maccabees, having heard very good things about their live set, I waited to be blown away. I’m pleased to say I was, from the opening “William Powers” the crowd sang every word with them. The band were very tight as well. I feel they done it the right way as well just building up and up into a soon to be very big band. The set was mostly “Wall of Arms” tracks but that didn’t seem to be a problem with the adoring followers. “No Kind Words” really stood out for me tonight. You can say I’ve become a fan. Kiss the Sun EP The first song on the CD is hypnotic drum sounding ‘Kiss the Sun’ great haunting chanting vocal. There is even an orchestral sound running in the background. ‘Black and White’ starts with a clean acoustic guitar, followed by a vocal sounding like Marc Bolan, there is a riff running all the way through that just keeps you hooked and I’m really looking forward to the album.

Persistence in this game A new, young and fresh straight up Rock n’ Roll band introducing their first album. The band ended 2009 rather successfully as they supported back to back tours with Kids in Glass Houses, The Automatic and Motorhead. These shows were the band’s first national tour of the UK. Okay the album the band has produced has a rather ecstatic feel to it. The drumming by Dane Campbell is perfect .The opening track ‘Versus the Allegiance’ is a good track however not my favourite on the album. As I listened to the next few tracks on the album ‘Loose Change’ and the final track on the album ‘Set me on Fire’ and ‘Feed me to the Wolves’ I knew these catchy choruses and some quality riffs on the guitar would earn the album a permanent spot in my collection.

Are You Ready New band formed by Richard Ashcroft. From the opening beat of the drums you’re already on board. Then into the orchestral sound which is very Ashcroft. The guitar playing is very ‘Rolling Stones’ as is the piano riff for that matter. It’s about time he came back to his best and I think with this track and the new album we might just get it. |

She Said ‘She Said’ is the second single from ‘The Defamation of Strickland Banks’ album. This is a track that Amy Winehouse would have died for to have on her last album or the new one for that matter. Plan B’s soul voice is exceptional, there really is no one around that has got a better soul voice (in my opinion). The Motown sound he has on this track will be a winner on radio. The rap he adds to the track also works really well. He’s taken his time to learn his craft and I’m pretty sure he will be around for a while. |

Hatfield Forum Saturday 6th February Now when I heard I was going over to review SGC I was not exactly jumping for joy. If I’m honest though, I must admit I was pleasantly surprised. If you’re aged between 11 - 30 and are up for a singsong there could be worst bands you could see. This is perfect pop at its best, they brought out all the big guns tonight i.e. ‘Elvis ain’t Dead’ Then they played ‘Blue Suede Shoes’, ‘I Wish I was James Bond’, ‘Heartbeat’, ‘It’s Not About You’ and their new single ‘This ain’t a Love Song’ and then on to some new songs from ‘Everybody Wants to be on TV’. The very catchy ‘Famous’ and the jump up and down ‘1+1=3’. They also added a Michael Jackson cover ‘Black & White’ and a Wings song ‘Live and Let Die’. They ended the night with ‘She’s so lovely’. The crowd was fantastic and sang to nearly every song they played. I’m sure if the Hatfield Forum keep putting nights like this on it will be a Hugh success for the already brilliant venue. |

Hatfield Forum Friday 5th February Jim Morrison is alive and well and playing in Hatfield! Well sort of, it’s really hard when you hear a cover band playing tunes that you’ve grown up with. One half wants to go and hear the songs played live, the other half is worried that it’s not going to match with what you think it should be. Well I’m happy to tell you that the first half is the winner here. All the hits are here from ‘LA Woman’ to ‘Peace Frog’. Stand out tracks tonight ‘Break on Through’, ‘Roadhouse Blues’ and ‘Soul Kitchen’. It’s a shame that the drummer was hurting from a sore arm because I think with them all firing on all cylinders we would have seen one of the best cover bands around but with that said and done I still think they are worth going out to see. Catch them soon if you can.

End Times The 16th album from the beautiful wordsmith that is E. The first time I heard this band was on TFI Friday singing Novocaine for the Soul. I must admit it wasn’t until a friend of mine pointed out the brilliant lyric “ Jesus and his lawyer are coming back” that I was blown away by them. So 13 years on his still writing and playing some great tunes. The new offering is End Times, which comes six months after his last release. The Album starts with the beautiful “ The Beginning” such a moving melody. Then on to the sixties sounding “Gone Man” then the wistful homage to lost youth “In My Younger Days” great lyrics. “Mansions of Los Feliz” three cord acoustic track you can’t help to like. In “A Line in the Dirt” we are listening to a couple breaking down. “End Times” & “Paradise Blues” are really the two ends of this album… End times being the slower side. The heart breaking “ I Need A Mother” reminds me of Lennon, my favorite track. With “Little Bird” and “On My Feet” he leaves us with a positive feel. He sings on the last track “One sweet day I’ll be back on my feet”. If you’ve not heard any of The Eels albums you really should treat yourself to at least one. This guys melody’s, lyrics & voice is something you really do not want to miss.

It seems appropriate to choose this album as the step back in time zone this month. Now after “Killing in The Name “ being Christmas number :) it makes me very pleased to tell you about the rest of the album… The album opens with “Bombtrack” this opens with such a cool riff then bang you’re in… You can’t help but fall for it … Forget political, forget protest, this is hard-core funk at its best… believe me… “Take the Power Back” the sound on this makes it feel like you’re in the room with them… Great production. I could listen to the guitars all day … “Settle for nothing” starts with a very moody bass line, mix with eerier feedback. Then over the top of that you have the brilliant vocal/rap that just blends so well. Then when you think we are full rock the gustier kicks in with a beautiful guitar run. “Bullet in The Head” makes me dance… And it will you as well… Can I also say, that sound your hearing on the guitar is all him… No overlays… “ Know Your Enemy” Please … Does it get any better… “Wake Up” nods its head to the old school (Kashmir Led Zep) then we’re back into the Rage way of things, Funky bass lines, and heavy drums. “Fistful of Steel” is a bit more chilled… Well I say that but not Coldplay chilled. “Township Rebellion” is just a full on funk vibe… Then we end the album with a big and mighty song called “ Freedom” perfect end to a perfect album. I got an e-mail telling me that Rage Against The Machine would be putting on a free show next year as a thank you for getting them to number 1 this Christmas. You got to love this band.
